The first and only ice hockey championship in the Eastern Zone was held in 1949. The games took place in Oberhof from February 11th to 13th, 1949 as part of the winter sports championships. The national champions of the Soviet occupation zone were eligible to participate . Since there were no championships in Brandenburg and Mecklenburg , only four teams were at the start. The Saxon representative of SG Frankenhausen became the first master of the Eastern Zone .
