The GDR ice hockey championship 1950 was held in March 1950 as part of the 1st winter sports championship in Schierke . The national champions were eligible to participate. Since no championships were held in Brandenburg and Mecklenburg , the second and third placed in the Saxon championships ( BSG Kristall Weißwasser and BSG Textil Crimmitschau ) were awarded the two starting places that had become vacant. The championships were initially planned for February 9th to 12th. They have been postponed due to the weather.

Qualification tournament for the league 1951
For the 1951 season , the establishment of a division with six teams was decided with the league . In addition to the top five winners in this year's championship, the last place, SG Schierke , should be awarded to the winner of a qualifying tournament. So that the league has another representative from Saxony-Anhalt in its ranks, the elimination tournament with SG Schierke, BSG MAS Granschütz and BSG KWU Halle was filled exclusively with teams from this country. As the new state champion of Saxony-Anhalt, SG Schierke raised the right to sixth starting place and stayed away from qualification in protest. Ultimately, the only game of this tournament, Granschütz won against Halle 9: 6 after two extra times. After all, neither a team from the qualification nor the fifth-placed BSG KWU Erfurt took part in the league in the coming year.
