In the GDR ice hockey championship 1986/87 , the league was played for the first time in play-off mode. In the future, the champions had to win two series of five games each in the "best-of-five" mode , with home rights changing after each encounter. If it was a draw at the end of the regular playing time, the winner was determined by overtime ( sudden death ) or by penalty shoot-out . After completing the first games, the account of those responsible seemed to work out, who hoped for more variety after the one-sided duels of recent years. But after both SC Dynamo Berlin and SG Dynamo Weißwasser both won a series, the defending champion from the capital had more to add in the decisive round and made the sixth title win in a row right at the start with three wins in a row.
Also in the GDR best determination, the title went to the capital to the BSG Monsator . In the end, the better goal difference for the Berliners and against the "eternal second" from Crimmitschau decided once again.
The determination of the best, which has now become a tradition, was held in Crimmitschau. While the A group played their finals in March 1987, the teams in the B group met two weeks earlier in February.
