The GDR ice hockey championship 1983/84 was again dominated in the major league by SC Dynamo Berlin . Although the SG Dynamo Weißwasser won the opening game, only the old and new champions from the capital triumphed in the other matches, securing the 11th title.
In the determination of the best, the BSG Monsator Berlin was only able to repeat its previous year's success thanks to the better goal difference compared to its arch rivals from Crimmitschau.
The determination of the best, which has now become a tradition, was held in Crimmitschau. While Group A played their finals on the second weekend in March, Group B teams met a week earlier.

District elimination
The first round and the elimination game for the relegation place were held in December 1984. The runner-up in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district took part in the latter with the BSG Progress Hohenstein-Ernstthal , since the second representative of the BSG Crimmitschau unit was not eligible for promotion.
