The GDR ice hockey championship in 1964/65 showed more clearly than ever before the two-tier society, which - also in other team sports - began to emerge due to the planned economy structures in the GDR. With the increase in the upper league, all sponsored sports club teams were united in the top division for the first time . The lower-class sports communities, on the other hand, preferred to start in the regional relays of the group league for reasons of cost, for which they - if athletically qualified - increasingly renounced their right to start in the higher classes. This year there were only three teams to get together for the league , which is why the previous second division was dissolved after the end of the season.
