Wolfgang Wünsche (born May 20, 1938 in Weißwasser / OL ; † June 13, 2018 in Rostock ) was a German ice hockey player and coach .

Career

As a boy born in Weißwasser, Wolfgang Wunsch learned how to ice-skate on the Braunsteich at the age of five, like many others back then. In 1950 he came to the ice hockey club, where he played in the youth teams until he made it into the team of BSG Chemie Weißwasser and SG Dynamo Weißwasser . In the seasons 1956/57 and 1957/58 he won the GDR championship with this team. Then he was delegated as one of five or six players to the team of the Dynamo sports association in Rostock, which played in the GDR league for the first time in 1956/57. He later also played for SC Empor Rostock . Although the Rostock teams could never reach the top of the GDR Oberliga, Wolfgang Wünsche was appointed to the GDR's national ice hockey team. In total, he completed 38 international matches for the GDR.

After the competitive sports decision of the GDR leadership in 1969, which classified ice hockey as not worthy of funding with regard to Olympic medals, there was no state support for ice hockey. The GDR Oberliga was reduced to two teams. After the dissolution of SC Empor Rostock, its players formed the squad of the newly founded VSG Rostock, which from 1972 took part in the GDR's best determination under the name BSG Chemie 70 Rostock .

After the fall of the Wall in the GDR , Wolfgang Wünsche helped set up the Rostock EC . At first he acted as a trainer for the competitors at EHC Timmendorfer Strand 06 and also at Adendorfer EC . From 2011 to 2014, the 70-year-old was a coach for the Rostock EC for three seasons and won the main round of the Oberliga Nord in 2011/12 and 2012/13 . At the time he was the oldest active ice hockey coach in the world.

The quote “Ice hockey is like boxing” comes from Wolfgang Wünsche. Anyone who is down after a duel has lost. "( Martina Wichor : Sports History: Quotes - Photos - Anecdotes)

Wolfgang Wünsche learned the profession of glassblower at VEB Oberlausitzer Glaswerke Weißwasser (OLG) in Weißwasser as the center of the glass industry . At the end of the 1980s he ran an HO restaurant.
