In the GDR ice hockey championship 1976/77 all games of the upper league were played in Berlin this time because the Weißwasseraner stadium was not available due to reconstruction measures. The continuing home advantage of the Berlin defending champions ultimately tipped the balance and gave the capital city club their fifth title win. Even if the two clearest victories of the entire series were due to the guests from Lausitz, they only delayed the final decision, which then became a reality on the penultimate matchday.
In the determination of the best , the BSG Monsator Berlin team won the title for the second time in a row, while the record winner Crimmitschau succeeded in being promoted back to the A group immediately.
The group A final tournament was held in February 1977 in Berlin; the B group had already completed their games in Crimmitschau two weeks earlier in January.
