In the GDR ice hockey championship 1975/76 ten instead of the previous six games between the two dynamo clubs from Weißwasser and Berlin were scheduled in the major league. The preliminary decision was made on the penultimate match day when the Berlin team was the first to record a double point win twice in a row with their away win. A convincing victory in front of their own audience on the final day of the match finally brought the capital city their first title win in eight years.
In the determination of the best , the relegation between the two groups that was only introduced last year was abolished. From then on, the B-group winner rose directly to the A-group, the last-placed winner had to take the vacated place in the B-group in return. While the Crimmitschau defending champion met exactly this fate, the BSG Monsator Berlin was able to achieve its first overall victory.
The final tournament of the A group was held in Rostock in March 1976, a week earlier the B group had completed its tournament round at the same place.
