• GDR championship

The 1951 GDR ice hockey championship was still held in 1950 from November 30th to December 17th. In three rounds of points within the newly created DS ice hockey league , the four best-placed participants in the winter sports championship of February 1950 met in the newly built Werner Seelenbinder Hall in East Berlin . The championships should be finished before Christmas so that the hall could be used for cycling events in January. BSG Ostglas Weißwasser , which celebrated its first title win without losing points, was the season winner of the league and thus GDR champions . Thousands of spectators saw the games, for which tickets were sold for between DM 1 and DM 4.

Promotion tournament to the league 1951/52

For the coming season it was decided to increase the field of participants to six teams. In addition to the four league teams set for this year's season, a tournament between the state champions of Thuringia , Saxony-Anhalt , Saxony and the representative of East Berlin was to decide on the allocation of the remaining two places on October 3 and 4, 1951 . In Brandenburg and Mecklenburg there were still no championships. After the state champions of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia failed to compete with BSG Chemie Granschütz and BSG Progress Apolda , the teams from Berlin ( SG DVP Berlin ) and Saxony ( BSG Einheit Dresden Süd ) were awarded the two league places to be awarded without a fight. The team from Apolda was later allowed to participate in the league, so that seven teams were played. Before that, the two Berlin teams played the representatives of Berlin against each other in a qualifying game for eligibility to participate in the promotion round to the DS-League.
