For the GDR ice hockey championship 1955/56 , a further division was established in addition to the upper league and the first division. SG Dynamo Weißwasser was again champion of the league .

    Due to the bad weather conditions, the promotion games were canceled in July 1956 and all interested district champions were given the right to start in the 2nd division. The BSG Motor Crimmitschau could not benefit from this. Even during the promotion round, the Crimmitschauern were subsequently stripped of their district championship title, as they had used three players without a valid license in the decisive game against BSG Wismut Annaberg . While the Annaberg team took the place of the Karl-Marx-Städter district champion and was thus allowed to play in the second division in the coming season, Crimmitschau had to remain in the district league. Ultimately, the following teams rose to the 2nd division for the 1956/57 season:
