The GDR ice hockey championship 1962/63 was held in the major league with six teams. Six teams also formed the league. As the third division, the group league was established for the first time , which consisted of four seasons. After two years, they returned to the practice of classifying them according to regional criteria. In season 1, Thuringian teams played, in season 2 mainly teams from the districts of Halle and Magdeburg , primarily the Harz region , in season 3 the teams from the Karl-Marx-Stadt district and in season 4 the teams from Lusatia .
The team of SG Dynamo Weißwasser became GDR champions for the 13th time . The record winner suffered another defeat after four years.
Although the BSG Lok Zittau secured relegation with this victory, they then moved back to the group league. The defeated BSG Stahl Brotterode refrained from taking the vacated place of the Zittauer and also started in the group league in the coming season.

Preliminary round - Season 1
The BSG Progress Apolda, planned as the fourth participant, withdrew before the start of the season.
In order to fill up the reduced group league season 1 - which also had to cope with the withdrawal of SC Turbine Erfurt II during the summer break - several teams were allowed to rise from the relevant Thuringian districts. The actually qualified representative from the Halle district , BSG Chemie Leuna II , renounced the promotion and was replaced by BSG Chemie Granschütz . All in all, the following district leagues have entered the group league for the coming season:
