For the GDR ice hockey championship 1973/74 the SG Dynamo Weißwasser and the SC Dynamo Berlin played again in the major league . Defending champion Weißwasser was already established as old and new champions three game days before the end.
In the GDR best determination , Einheit Crimmitschau replaced Motor Optima Erfurt at the top of all amateur teams after one year .
The tournament of the determination of the best was held in March 1974 in Crimmitschau .

New registrations for the best determination 1974/75
The winners of the respective district championships were eligible to participate. For these teams, the district championship title was sufficient for the last time as a starting authorization, as a preliminary qualification with subsequent relegation should be scheduled in the future. There were no new registrations and the GDR determination of the best started the next season with an unchanged field of participants.
