The GDR ice hockey championship 1977/78 gave SC Dynamo Berlin a safe title hat-trick and the sixth overall triumph. In a one-sided league round, the capital city dominated the rival from Weißwasser almost at will and decided the championship in the middle of the ten-game series. The Lausitzers, on the other hand, did not achieve a single victory, which was unique since the introduction of this tournament format in the 1970/71 season.

With Monsator Berlin , another team from the capital celebrated a title hat trick. Meanwhile undefeated in the GDR best determination for four seasons , the team consisting of former SC Dynamo squad players kept themselves harmless this time and won undisputed against the resurgent long-term rivals from Crimmitschau.

Relegation (GDR best determination - district league)

The relegation was not carried out until the next season in Crimmitschau as part of the A-group best determination in 1979.

BSG Chemie Leuna - BSG progress Hohenstein-Ernstthal 6: 4
(Last of the B group / B. determination) (Winner of the elimination of the district champion)

The BSG Chemie Leuna was thus allowed to start in the B group of the GDR best determination in 1979, which began four weeks after this relegation. The inferior district league team BSG Progress Hohenstein-Ernstthal received 14 days later - but without evaluation - also the start permit for the determination of the best after the BSG Chemie 70 Rostock had canceled at short notice.

District elimination

The elimination matches between the district champions were omitted, as championships had only taken place in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district . Since the local winner SG Dynamo Klingenthal was already playing in the determination of the best and the championship runner-up BSG Aufbau Schönheide waived, the third-placed from Hohenstein-Ernstthal took part in the relegation.
