Dieter Frenzel (born June 29, 1955 in Roßlau ) is a former German ice hockey player who was active as a defender . With SC Dynamo Berlin , for which he played from 1972 to 1989, he was GDR champion twelve times . In addition, he completed 296 international matches for the GDR national team . In the 2001/02 season he was briefly head coach of the Hannover Scorpions in the German Ice Hockey League and is a member of the Hall of Fame of the Ice Hockey Museum in Augsburg .

Athletic career

Dieter Frenzel played from 1972 to 1989 for SC Dynamo Berlin , today's "Eisbären Berlin", in the ice hockey league , the national championship of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). During this time he won twelve GDR championship titles with the club . In the club's annals he holds the record for the most goals by a defender with 62 goals in 141 games to this day. His jersey number "5" has been hanging as a banner in the Eisbären Berlin stadium since December 2004.

In 1989 he was the first ice hockey player from the GDR to officially join a German club. From 1989 to 1993 he played at EC Ratingen in the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga and in the 1992/1993 season in the ice hockey Bundesliga . In the seasons 1993/1994 and 1994/1995 he was active for EC Wilhelmshaven-Stickhausen in the third and second division respectively; in the 1995/1996 season he played at EC Nordhorn .

From 1996 to 1998 Frenzel was head coach at the EC in Hanover in the second-class 1st League North, from 2000 he coached the Crocodiles Hamburg . In the 2001/2002 season he was the head coach of the Hannover Scorpions in the German Ice Hockey League .

International

For the national ice hockey team of the GDR , in which he served as team captain for ten years, he completed a total of 296 international matches. He took part in 13 ice hockey world championships and is one of five players with 250 or more games in the GDR national team, only Dietmar Peters achieved more appearances. At the B World Championships in Galaţi in 1979 and in Klagenfurt in 1982 , Dieter Frenzel was appointed to the All-Star Team. His best international ranking was sixth at the 1983 World Cup .
