Grün-Weiß Ilsenburg was founded in 1912 under the name VfB Ilsenburg . Until 1945, the club was always under-class within Central German football, and no participation in the Gauliga Mitte took place.

In 1945 the association was dissolved and re-established as SG Ilsenburg . In the following period, the loose sports group was renamed BSG Stahl Ilsenburg again from 1951 with the entry of the STAHL sports association and the local copper works , whose name it carried until 1992.

On a sporting level, the SG Ilsenburg was briefly represented in the game operations of the LL Sachsen-Anhalt ( SBZ ) in the 1947/48 season , but had no chance in the fight to stay up. It wasn't until 1968 that the Harz club, after a 4-2 victory over the second representation of Motor / Vorwärts Oschersleben, achieved their first promotion to the third-class district league Magdeburg . Stahl Ilsenburg held the district league, with brief interruptions, until the East German game operations were closed in 1991. Stahl Ilsenburg reached the Magdeburg Cup final in the 1972/73 and 1988/89 seasons, losing to Motor Schönebeck and Motor Wernigerode in both finals .

With the withdrawal of the sponsoring company , the club was renamed Grün-Weiß Ilsenburg again , and since then the club has been operating without exception.
