from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Augustin-Henri Delattre , often just called Henri Delattre , also written Henri de Lattre , (* September 30, 1800 (corresponds to 8th Vendémiaire X) in Saint-Omer , Pas-de-Calais department, France ; † June 11, 1876 in Paris in the 12th arrondissement ) was a French animal painter and portrait artist .

Life

Augustin-Henri Delattre was the son of Louis Henri Delattre and Eugénie Lemaire. His brother Adolphe Delattre was also an artist and ornithologist . In 1824 he exhibited the painting Interior d'écurie for the first time in the Salon de Paris . Delattres pictorial themes concentrated on landscapes with animals, rustic furnishings and especially animal portraits. Mostly they were horses, but also other animals such as dogs, bulls and rams. During the reign of Louis-Philippe I , he was a popular artist in France . In 1835 he painted in Normandy and Switzerland . After the February Revolution of 1848 he went into exile in the United States . On March 7, 1849, Alexis de Tocqueville wrote a letter to Francis Lieber , in which he praised Delattre as a very talented artist and honorable character and asked Lieber for support in his work. Delattre lived in Philadelphia between 1849 and 1855 . A stay in Canada followed in 1850 . To escape the heat of the summer in the USA, he went to the Great Île in the Saint Lawrence River , a quarantine station for Irish immigrants near Québec , to paint. He exhibited his works from 1824 to 1848 and from 1863 to 1875 at the Salon de Paris. In 1838 he had an exhibition at the British Institution in London and from 1849 to 1865 at the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts . Further trips took him to the Finger Lakes and the Genesee Valley . His pictures show that he was also in Boston , Portsmouth and Maine. Additional exhibitions of works by Delattre took place at the National Academy of Design in New York City and at the Maryland Historical Society . During his time in Quebec, he won several artistic competitions with gold medals and other cash prizes. His most important American work showed the general and politician Zachary Taylor at a horse race.

Dedication names

Henry De Lattre's Cazique painted by Henry Constantine Richter

Adolphe Delattre, together with Lesson, dedicated both the French common name Oiseaux-Mouche Henry and the scientific taxon Ornismya Henrica to his brother in 1839 . So they wrote: Dédié à Henry De Lattre, voyageur et frère de M. De Lattre. Later it turned out that this species was described as the red-throated nymph ( Lampornis amethystinus ) as early as 1827 by William Swainson . Nonetheless, John Gould also uses the common name Henry De Lattre's Cazique ( Delattria henrici ) for the same hummingbird. Robert Ridgway uses the common name Henri Delattre's Humming Bird in his book The humming birds .
