Ice hockey in Schierke
Ice hockey was first played in Schierke , a district of Wernigerode in the Harz Mountains , on February 5, 1911, when the newly built ice rink on the Kalten Bode was inaugurated with a game between two Berlin teams. In the 1950s and 1960s SG Dynamo Schierke played in the GDR group league, in the 1990s ESV Schierke played in the Lower Saxony league and the Northern Association league.

Beginnings
The construction of the ice rink went back to Kurhaus director Otto Hartmann . In November 1910 the Schierker ESC (ice hockey and skeleton club) was founded. In 1913 , the German ice hockey championship was to be held as part of the winter sports week in Schierke. Due to the weather, only one game could then take place, which counted as the North German qualification.
Between the world wars
From 1920 onwards ice hockey was played again in Schierke, but it was not until 1928 that the Schierker ice hockey team was formed. However, this did not initially take part in the game. The German ice hockey championship in 1934 took place as part of the 4th Winter Fighting Games in Schierke. The SV Schierke defeated in the second round the runner- SC Riessersee with 00:21.
In the DDR
After the Second World War, the Schierke sports community was founded. This became the state champion of Saxony-Anhalt in early 1949 and again in 1950 . At the Eastern Zone Championship in 1949 , the SG was fourth and last. In 1950, the 1st GDR winter sports championship took place in Schierke , where the first GDR champions were also played . The SG Schierke landed again in last place.
The club was renamed BSG Einheit Schierke and took part in the second-class league for the first time in 1952/53 . In 1955 it was renamed SG Dynamo Schierke again . After a league reform they started in the third class 2nd division in the same year. Due to a reduction in the number of teams, they were relegated to the Magdeburg district league in 1960 , but could be promoted again directly. The league, now renamed the group league, became the second highest division in 1965 .
After the so-called competitive sports decision in 1969 , the group league was dissolved and the promotion of ice hockey in the GDR stopped. Schierke was able to win the district championship title in 1971, later only friendlies were played. A student team was built up again from 1984.

After the reunification, the club was renamed the Schierke ice hockey club . From 1990 the ESV took part in the games of the Lower Saxony State Ice Sports Association. However, the games took place in the neighboring Braunlage , as the natural ice stadium was no longer suitable for league games. They joined the Lower Saxony state league, became champions in 1992 and 1993 and rose to the Lower Saxony league in 1993 and even to the association league in 1994. In 2001 the game had to be stopped for financial reasons. One reason for this was the bankruptcy of the second division club Braunlager EHC / Harz , with whom ESV Schierke cooperated and from whom he could borrow players.
As a result, only a few friendlies were played. Since mid-December 2017, the covered flint arena , built for around 9 million euros, has also been available for ice hockey on the site of the listed natural ice rink .
