The Shirase Coast is the northern stretch of coast east of the Ross Ice Shelf and the Ross Sea in the West Antarctic Marie Byrd Land . It lies between the northern end of the Siple coast at 83 ° 30'S, 155 ° 0 'W and Cape Colbeck .
In the section north of 80 ° 10'S there is also the term Prestrud Coast . Elsewhere, the Prestrud Coast is recorded as a name variant of the Shirase Coast .
The New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1961 after the Japanese polar explorer Shirase Nobu (1861-1946), head of the Japanese Antarctic Expedition (1910-1912).
