The Shackleton Coast is a stretch of coast in the Ross Dependency of Antarctica . It extends along the western edge of the Ross Ice Shelf between Cape Selborne in the north and Airdrop Peak on the eastern flank of the Beardmore Glacier in the south. To the north it is bordered by the Hillary Coast , to the south and east by the Dufek Coast .
The New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the coast in 1961 after the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922), participant in the Discovery Expedition (1901-1904) and leader of the Nimrod Expedition (1907-1909), the endurance expedition (1914–1917) and the Quest Expedition (1921–1922) to Antarctica. The four-man southern group of the Nimrod expedition, led by Shackleton, first sighted the section of this coast south of Shackleton Inlet in 1908 .
