The Hillary Coast is a stretch of coast in the south of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It extends along the western edge of the Ross Ice Shelf between Minna Bluff in the north and Cape Selborne in the south, and thus includes the mouth of the Byrd Glacier . The Shackleton Coast connects to the south and the Scott Coast to the north .
The New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the coast in 1961 after the New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary (1919-2008), first to climb Mount Everest and head of the New Zealand team on the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958). He reached the South Pole on January 4, 1958 and was the fourth expedition leader to succeed after Roald Amundsen , Robert Falcon Scott and George J. Dufek . Various New Zealand crews carried out detailed surveys of the coast and explored ascent routes from the Ross Ice Shelf to the polar plateau via the Skelton and Darwin glaciers that flow into the coast .
