The Skelton Glacier is a large glacier in the south of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It flows from the polar plateau in a north-westerly direction to the Ross Ice Shelf , which it reaches at Skelton Inlet . Numerous other glaciers, including the Allison Glacier , flow into the Skelton Glacier.
The glacier served in the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958) of the New Zealand team under the direction of the New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary as an ascent route from the Ross Ice Shelf to the polar plateau. She named it based on the naming of the inlet of the same name after Reginald Skelton (1872-1965), chief engineer on the British Discovery Expedition (1901-1904). The New Zealanders supported the group led by British polar explorer Vivian Fuchs , who made the first land crossing of the Antarctic continent.
