The Royal Society Range is a mountain range of the Transantarctic Mountains in the south of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It stretches along the Scott coast between the Koettlitz , Skelton and Ferrar glaciers . The highest point is Mount Lister at 4025 m . Other named peaks are Mount Rucker with 3816 m and Mount Hooker with 3800 m .
Numerous young cinder cones are evidence of Pleistocene volcanism in this region , possibly lasting into the Holocene .
The first sighting was probably done in 1841 by James Clark Ross . The mountain range was explored by participants in the Discovery Expedition (1901-1904) under the direction of British polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott , who named it after the Royal Society and named many peaks after their members. The Royal Society had given the expedition financial and organizational support.
