history

Figure skating in Schierke, 1950
Listed competition judges tower, 2016

There has been an ice rink at this location on the Kalten Bode since 1911. Ice hockey was played there for decades . On February 5, 1911, the inauguration of this newly built ice rink in Schierke took place with a game between two ice hockey teams from Berlin.

The Schierker Feuerstein Arena emerged from a natural ice stadium, which was built on this site for the 1st GDR championships in winter sports in 1950 and which had become dilapidated over the years. This ice rink was home to the ice hockey club Schierke. In the winter season, ice could be skated there if the weather was appropriate. It was possible to borrow ice skates. Ice discos took place two days a week.

With the modernization of the ice rink, the variety of offers in Schierke that can be used all year round is to be strengthened. The long tradition as a winter sports resort played just as important a role as the now necessary year-round use option for the more than 180,000 overnight guests in Schierke.

The arena should be a central component of the local and tourism development in Schierke. Ice skating is possible in the winter months regardless of the weather thanks to the planned covered, 25 by 56 meter large artificial ice surface and the cold plate built into the ground. The roof is curved like a linden leaf, up to 15 meters high and consists of a steel frame over which a Teflon-coated glass fiber membrane is stretched. Due to the overall architectural design, parts of the visitor area remain without a roof. In addition, the construction of two functional buildings, which are to be used for renting skates, bistro, toilet and changing rooms, as well as storage and accommodation for the refrigeration technology, has been realized.

The opening of the Schierker Feuerstein Arena was originally planned for the beginning of the winter season on December 1, 2017 and was later postponed to December 15, 2017. In March 2018, the Schierker Feuerstein Arena hosted the German championships in pond hockey , an archetype of ice hockey. In the future, the ice rink will always be operated from November to Easter. In the summer months, in addition to climbing, bouldering and jumping and jumping, concerts and other cultural or sporting events will be offered.

The use of the arena was more successful than expected with 32,000 visitors in the 2017/18 winter season, but with 9,000 visitors in the 2018 summer season, the use of the arena fell short of the expectations of 12,000 visitors.

The design of the Schierker Feuerstein Arena comes from the GRAFT architects , which Lars Krückeberg represented at the laying of the foundation stone in 2016.

A little more than two years after the inauguration of the hall, the roof has to be completely renewed due to structural and planning defects. The roof construction with the plastic membrane did not withstand the weather conditions and the first weak points appeared, which reduced the load-bearing capacity. After the accumulation of water on the roof, the renovation was decided. The new membrane is to be stretched over the old roof so that the hall is protected from wind and weather during the work. Then the old roof underneath will be dismantled piece by piece. The goal is the reopening on July 16, 2020. Whether this deadline can be kept is not only due to the work. The government's requirements due to the COVID-19 pandemic also oppose this. Big events are not planned in the summer season anyway because of the pandemic, but visitors should be attracted with the climbing walls, the trampoline world and play areas.

Cost development

In 2013, the application for funding for the planning of the ice stadium (Schierker Feuerstein Arena) was approved. The federal and state governments took over 2/3 of the total investment volume. As a result, at the beginning of 2013, a Europe-wide architectural competition for the reactivation and redesign of the listed ice stadium in Schierke was announced by the Saxony-Anhalt City Redevelopment Competence Center , a subordinate institution of the Ministry for Regional Development and Transport with the city administration of Wernigerode . The temporary local development committee of Schierke of the Wernigerode City Council, formed in May 2013 and chaired by the Lord Mayor Peter Gaffert , presented the renovation plans at the first committee meeting. The state of Saxony-Anhalt wanted to cover two thirds of the costs, which were then calculated at around 6 million euros. The city council of Wernigerode approved the construction project in May 2014 with 21 to 16 votes. The costs at that time were calculated at 6.4 million euros. In addition, further costs of approx. 670,000 euros were estimated for development, building a new bridge over the Kalte Bode and equipping the Schierker Feuerstein Arena. At the initiative of the SPD parliamentary group, the city council of Wernigerode decided in May 2014 that the plant's deficit should not exceed € 200,000 per year.

In 2015, the second part of the ice stadium (Schierke-Arena) funding application was approved. The federal and state governments each assumed a third of the total investment volume of € 5,160,000. The third part of the ice stadium (Schierker Feuerstein Arena) funding application was submitted in 2016 and the investment volume for this third part was calculated at € 720,000.

The public laying of the foundation stone took place on May 18, 2016 in the presence of Transport Minister Thomas Webel , Finance Minister André Schröder , Economics Minister Jörg Felgner , Lord Mayor Peter Gaffert and other high-ranking guests. It was announced that the federal and state governments will support the construction project with around 5.2 million euros from the Urban Redevelopment East program . The cost of the project has now been calculated at € 7.05 million.

Further cost increases were announced publicly on October 26, 2016. Although a building site report was available, the earthworks in the stadium and for the grandstand, due to the partially unsustainable subsoil and the 80% rock underground, the shell of the planned functional building and the foundations or trailers for the arena roof should be around 285,000 € cost more. According to information from the local press, the total amount of the additional costs was estimated at around 1.4 million, as some lots, such as outdoor stairs and lighting, have not yet been awarded.

The state of Saxony-Anhalt ended the funding of the building on July 10, 2017 due to general provisions for funding the district of Schierke as part of the urban redevelopment east program, after the city of Wernigerode in the state of Saxony-Anhalt another € 1.4 million for Schierkes Had applied for development, including a further € 420,000 specifically for the Schierker Feuerstein Arena.

After the city council of Wernigerode approved a further supplement of € 480,000 for the arena in August 2017, further additional costs of around € 490,000 were announced in a press release from the city administration on September 6, 2017. “ The total costs are then 8.95 million euros. "
