Life

Training and career beginnings

After attending the Polytechnic Oberschule Leutnant Lutz Meier Ahlsdorf , graduating from EOS in Eisleben in 1979 and a three-year service with the MfS guard regiment in Halle (Saale) , Peter Gaffert studied forest sciences from 1983 to 1988 at the forest sciences faculty of the Technical University of Dresden in Tharandt . He graduated with a degree in forest engineering. He began his professional career in 1988 as an assistant at the State Forestry Company Blankenburg (Harz) (after the reunification State Forestry Office Blankenburg), where he worked as a construction manager of a forest tree nursery in the Harz Mountains as well as a district manager and finally rose to head of department. In 1991 he switched to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forests of Saxony-Anhalt as a consultant for forest policy , forest law and forest support , thus helping to rebuild the state government.

As national park manager

His work in the ministry ended in 1994 when he was appointed head of the Hochharz National Park Administration, based in Wernigerode, on May 1st as the successor to Hubertus Hlawatsch for the Hochharz National Park. Nature conservation associations certified that his management had a high level of nature conservation expertise and praised the original public relations work and the high value placed on scientific research. From 2000 to 2005, Gaffert was also the managing director of Brockenhaus gGmbH, which he founded . In the course of merging the Hochharz National Park with the neighboring Harz National Park in Lower Saxony , however, he lost the management position in 2004 for reasons of political proportionality.

For a short time from September to the end of 2004 he was administrative manager of the planned Karstlandschaft Südharz biosphere reserve in Roßla . Gaffert then took over the post of director of the National Park Office Kellerwald-Edersee in Bad Wildungen ( Hesse ). When he took office in January 2005, the new national park manager and his team were faced with the task of anchoring the project in the region after many previous political squabbles and providing it with broad support. This development work succeeded in a short time and once again brought great recognition to Gaffert, who since December 2007 also served as managing director of the non-profit association Nationalparkzentrum Kellerwald mbH. When he said goodbye, Dr. Eberhard Henne, chairman of the umbrella organization for large German protected areas Europarc Deutschland, as one of the “best national park managers in the Federal Republic”.

Gaffert himself summarized his experiences with the two national parks in 2008 as follows:

“I had the great job of building the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park from scratch. By the way, the Hessians did better than the Harzers: They first fought about it for ten years and then founded the park, while the Harzers first founded the park and then argued for ten years. But of course that was a completely different starting point at the end of the GDR. "

politics

Since Gaffert missed his homeland in the Harz Mountains despite all the successes in the Kellerwald, he gladly accepted the offer of the SPD local association Wernigerode to run for her as a non-party candidate in the 2008 mayor election. The previous incumbent Ludwig Hoffmann (SPD) did not want to run again after 14 years. The local association of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen also supported Gaffert, as the Greens and the SPD form a joint parliamentary group in the Wernigerode city council. In the election on April 13, 2008, Gaffert immediately prevailed with 56 percent of the votes cast, and on August 1, 2008, he took over the office of Lord Mayor.

Supervisory board

In 2013 he was elected to succeed Michael Ermrich as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Harzer Schmalspurbahnen GmbH .

Voluntary work and memberships

As an enthusiastic cross-country skier , Peter Gaffert was active as chairman of the Association for Skiing and Nature Conservation in the Harz Mountains (FVSN) and as a member of the environmental advisory board of the German Ski Association (DSV) . He is also a member of the program advisory board of the Technical University of Dresden and works as a Rotarian . He is also a member of the Brockenlauf Club.
