GDR Ski Championships 1977

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 29th GDR Ski Championships took place from February 10th to 13th, 1977 in Oberwiesenthal , Saxony . Around 180 athletes took part in nine decisions in the Nordic ski disciplines cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , two of which were team competitions. In the previous season, the Nordic skiers won gold, silver and bronze twice at the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck . After that, Gerhard Grimmer and Axel Lesser among the cross-country skiers and Hans-Georg Aschenbach among the ski jumpers three successful athletes retired from competitive sports. Especially in men's cross-country skiing, these championships were a new start. However, this restart took place under difficult conditions. Due to the Winter Partakiade of the Sports Committee of the Friendly Armies (SKDA), which took place in Liberec , Czechoslovakia , the athletes from Oberhof were missing from the men's competitions. The ASK Vorwärts started with 22 athletes. Shortly before Christmas, the champions on the long distances had been determined. The races over 50 km for men and 20 km for women took place in Klingenthal-Mühlleithen .

Cross-country skiing

Men

15 km

After his rather disappointing eighth place over 30 kilometers, Gert-Dietmar Klause didn't give the competition a chance over the 15 kilometers. With a 42-second lead, he relegated his club-mate Jürgen Wolf to silver. Hartmut Freyer from Oberwiesenthal was able to break through the phalanx of the Klingenthal runners with the bronze medal. After all, five dynamo athletes were among the top six.

30 km

The Klingenthal cross-country skiers were able to record a triple success. Gerd Heßler as the new master was not necessarily to be expected. The 15-time DDR champion Gert-Dietmar Klause was actually favored. Handicapped by a cold, however, he only came in eighth. This cleared the way for Heßler's first title over the 30 kilometers. With Hartmut Freyer from Oberwiesenthal, the first athlete from another club came in fourth, but only three seconds behind bronze medalist Alf-Gerd Deckert.

50 km

In the first championship competition, the Olympic runner-up from Innsbruck, Gert-Dietmar Klause, celebrated his fourth championship title over the long distance. He almost outclassed his rivals, Hartmut Freyer crossed the finish line in second, more than three minutes behind, and bronze medalist Jürgen Wolf even five minutes behind. One of the most promising competitors, the Klingenthaler Gerd Heßler, had to give up after 35 kilometers due to a fall.

Women

5 km

Veronika Schmidt triumphed over the sprint course with a time of under 16 minutes, never before in the GDR championships. It was exciting about the runner-up title. In the end, only four tenths separated Sigrun Krause from the bronze medalist Barbara Petzold. The only 16-year-old Birgit Schreiber from Oberwiesenthal only missed bronze by two seconds.

10 km

The 1974 vice world champion , Barbara Petzold, celebrated her first title over 10 kilometers on this track. Starting half a minute behind last year's winner Veronika Schmidt, the Oberwiesenthaler was already tied after four and a half kilometers. At the finish line, Petzold had lost almost a minute from Zella-Mehliserin, which meant fifth place for Veronika Schmidt. The Junior World Championship candidates Ute Nestler , Marlies Rostock , Elvira Pechmann and Birgit Schreiber were given a break.

20 km

Barbara Petzold was able to celebrate her second championship title after 1974 over the long distance. On a partly icy track, Veronika Schmidt, who fell three times during the run, won silver. Last year's winner Sigrun Krause took bronze.

4x5 km relay

The victory of the Oberwiesenthal relay was never in danger, the relay around Barbara Petzold was too strong, even if two runners, Ute Nestler and Birgit Schreiber, were only 16 years old. Although the lead after the second runner had melted from half a minute to a quarter of a minute over the Klingenthal relay, Birgit Schreiber in particular, but also Barbara Petzold, ultimately ran out a lead of over a minute and a half. Thanks to the strong final runner Veronika Schmidt, the SC Motor Zella-Mehlis relay, which was still in fifth place after three runners, still won bronze.

Nordic combination

Even after jumping, the Olympic champion from Innsbruck, Ulrich Wehling, was aiming for his fourth GDR championship title. However, he was only three points behind the bronze medalist from Innsbruck, Konrad Winkler, on his heels. However, Winkler was unable to shorten this gap in cross-country skiing, but increased it to 49 seconds, which was also due to a damaged binding on Winkler's skis. For Winkler, Silber was thus behind Wehling. Werner Leipold from Zella-Mehlis was celebrated as a championship discovery, who surprisingly won the bronze medal in front of ambitious youngsters like Gunter Schmieder and Andreas Langer.

Ski jumping

Normal hill

The last competition of the championships took place on the Fichtelbergschanze in Oberwiesenthal. In the absence of the Oberhof Four Hills Tournament winner Jochen Danneberg , the Zella Mehliser Harald Duschk won his first championship title. One of the favorites Henry Glaß, who was third in the previous Four Hills Tournament and was decorated with silver from the large hill the day before, fell in the trial run with a record distance. The doctors then advised him against further jumps. After what had been a mixed season until then, Falko Weißpflog won a silver medal, albeit with a gap of almost 12 points onuchek. For the new GDR master of the large hill, Thomas Meisinger, it was only enough for bronze this time.

Large hill

The 19-year-old Klingenthaler Thomas Meisinger had already drawn attention to himself at the previous Four Hills Tournament . He finished sixth in the overall standings. After a healed ankle injury, he was able to celebrate his first and only GDR championship title in front of a home crowd of 20,000 spectators on the Great Aschbergschanze. Only Meisinger managed to make two almost equally strong jumps. His club-mate Henry Glaß was nine points behind the winner. The regained Dietrich fight won bronze.

Medal table

The SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal had to admit defeat to the dynamo athletes from Klingenthal despite their home advantage. At ASK Oberhof, the lack of athletes like Martin Weber or Jochen Danneberg made itself felt.
