Karsten Brandt (born September 14, 1958 in Wernigerode ) is a former German cross-country skier . His greatest successes include twelve GDR championship titles.

Career

Brandt grew up in Elend (Harz) , where his mother, Elisabeth Leistner, née Peters, was at home. He attended school in neighboring Schierke . There he began to ski more intensively with Sigrid and Heiner Klinge at the Dynamo sports club . At a competition in Oberhof in 1972 he was noticed by trainers from Klingenthal , where he moved in 1973.

Brandt, who then started for the SC Dynamo Klingenthal , was particularly successful at the national level at the GDR ski championships . In 1975 he won the title over 20 km in the junior class in Steinheid . He won silver with the relay at the GDR ski championships in 1977 in Oberwiesenthal . The 1979 season repeated this result in Oberhof .

Brandt won his first senior individual title at the 1980 GDR ski championships in Klingenthal. He was also successful there with the season, which also included Steffen Kühne , Jürgen Bachmann and Alf-Gerd Deckert . The following year in Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig Brandt had to admit defeat to Andreas Rollinger over the 30 km and won silver. With the season, however, he was able to defend his title from the previous year. The 1982 GDR ski championships in Oberwiesenthal were even more successful . There he won the 30 km and 50 km and celebrated his third consecutive season victory. He finished fourth over the 15 km.

At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo , Brandt ran over 15 km to 41st place. Three days earlier he had crossed the finish line in 30th place over twice the distance. In the 4 x 10 km relay race, he finished ninth together with Frank Schröder , Uwe Wünsch and Uwe Bellmann . Just a few days before the games, Brandt had again won the titles over 15 and 30 km as well as with the relay at the GDR ski championships in 1984 in Lauscha .

At the GDR ski championships in 1985 in Oberwiesenthal, he won his last national medals with gold over the 15 km and bronze over the 50 km distance.

He later moved to Eubabrunn in Vogtland and worked professionally as a sales representative for model making and toys. He was active in sports as a triathlete . Brandt still competes in cross-country skiing races for SG Blau-Weiss Reichenbach in his spare time, including the International Kammlauf on the Aschberg.
