Career

High school soccer and U-17 international

Alex Shinsky was born on April 2, 1993 to the architect Anthony Joseph Shinsky and the teacher Justine Kloske in the city of York in the US state of Pennsylvania. Here he grew up alongside his older brother Max, who later also played college football , and his sister Elise. In his childhood and youth he appeared for the local youth training club SuperNova FC under Niki Nikolic , a former professional player and trainer of Yugoslav origin. He played for the school's soccer team while at West York Area High School before being given the opportunity to train at IMG Academy in Bradenton , Florida . He was a member of this renowned training center in 2008 and 2009 and thus made it to the US U-17 national team. As early as the spring of 2008, he was a member of the US U-15 squad , which was then coached by Jim Barlow . The then 14-year-old first appeared in the U-17 team in February 2008. Subsequently, he took part in various friendly matches and small tournaments with the national team.

In 2008 he took part in tournaments in France and South America ( Copa Cuidad de Rosario ) under coach Wilmer Cabrera . After gaining experience playing against club and national teams that year, he continued to be part of the U-17 squad the following year. As part of this, in March 2009 he was part of a 20-strong squad that started preparing for the CONCACAF U-17 championship after successfully completing friendly matches . In said tournament he was also a member of the US 20-man player selection, in which he was one of two American players born in 1993 at the side of Luis Gil . As the clear winner of Group A, the United States rose together with the runner-up in the group and the two first-placed nations in Group B in the subsequent semi-finals; however, this was not held due to the swine flu outbreak . All four nations qualified for the U-17 World Cup in Nigeria six months later .

Then Shinsky took part in the complete preparation for the World Cup, where the winger also came to regular international appearances. This included the Copa Macae friendship tournament in Brazil , in which the team took part in July 2009 and which it finished as the winner. After he was still used in the rest of the preparation, he was part of the 21-man squad of the United States that took part in the World Cup in Nigeria. Along with Luis Gil, Boyd Okwuonu and Will Packwood , Shinsky was one of four US players in the tournament born in 1993. As a regular on the wings, Shinsky was used in all four games in his home country. After a 2-1 loss to Spain in the first group game, it was Shinsky's goal in the 54th minute of the game that brought the United States to a 1-0 win over Malawi in the second group game. After that, the midfielder was also involved in the third game of Group E against the United Arab Emirates (1-0 win) and in the 1-2 defeat against Italy in the round of 16 and the associated elimination from the tournament. In the course of the two years in the U-17 national team, Shinsky completed 14 international matches, with the midfielder contributing two goals.

After leaving the U-17 national team and the IMG Academy at the end of 2009, his time at SuperNova FC also ended ; subsequently he joined the training club Baltimore Bays and played in this until 2011 for Baltimore Bays Chelsea . Continue the same time he attended the approximately one-hour drive from Baltimore distant West York Area High School , where he also graduated and still belonged to the school's football team. He was in the All-State selection for four years in a row and was a Senior Parade All-American from 2009 to 2011 . At the end of his high school days he was considered one of the most outstanding American players of his year; TopDrawerSoccer.com voted him No. 1-rated recruit of 2011 and College Soccer News voted in for second place nationwide. At the same time he made it into a junior team of the United States Soccer Federation , whose U-18 selection he briefly belonged this year.

Time at the University of Maryland, College Park

In 2011 joined Shinsky to the University of Maryland, College Park , for which he chose his own words to reflect the outstanding football program and the great atmosphere, and he is in a semester earlier enrolled . In his freshman year 2011, the talented midfielder appeared in only eleven championship games of the Maryland Terrapins , remained goalless himself, but contributed two assists for his teammate. In the following sophomore year, Shinsky already made 19 league appearances, where he was mainly used as a joker from the bench by his coach Sasho Cirovski . It was not until the 14th round that the midfielder was in the starting line-up for the first time. Once again he was goalless himself, but this year he had two assists for his teammates. In addition, he lost with his team only one of 18 games in the regular season and was able to prevail with the team in the subsequent ACC Men's Soccer Tournament 2012 against the competition. As tournament winners, the Maryland Terrapins entered the game of the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament 2012 in the second round . After victories over Brown , Coastal Carolina and Louisville, the Terrapins were only defeated in the final games of the College Cup on penalties in the semifinals against Georgetown .

Even in his junior year 2013, Shinsky was not necessarily Cirovski's first choice. Of 16 championship games in which he was used this season, he started in just three games from the start. After the team was able to defend the title and finish the ACC Men's Soccer Tournament 2013 as a winner, the team played the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament 2013 , with Shinsky scoring the first competitive goal of his college career in the decisive quarter-final game against the California Golden Bears could. Then the crucial phase of the College Cup started. Defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 2: 1 in the semifinals , and lost Shinsky with his Terrapins in the decisive final against Notre Dame Fighting Irish just 1: 2. With Patrick Mullins , the Terrapins were once again able to provide the tournament's top scorer.
