GDR Ski Championships 1976

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 28th GDR ski championships took place from February 18 to 22, 1976 in Lauscha , Thuringia . Around 180 athletes took part in nine decisions in the Nordic ski disciplines cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , two of which were team competitions. On the previous Sunday, championship participants had fought for Olympic medals at the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck . Overall, the Nordic skiers from the GDR won gold, silver and bronze twice. All of these medal winners were also at the start in Lauscha. Shortly before the turn of the year, the champions on the long distances had been determined. Due to a lack of snow, the originally planned races over 50 km for men and 20 km for women from Goldlauter-Heidersbach to the ski area around the Großer Beerberg near Oberhof have been moved.

After his clear defeat over the 30 kilometers, the Klingenthaler Gerd Heßler was able to turn the tables this time and relegated his club mate Gert-Dietmar Klause to the silver rank by a clear margin. Gerhard Grimmer won bronze again in his last individual race at the GDR championships.

Only five days after winning the silver medal over the 50 kilometers in Innsbruck, Gert-Dietmar Klause from Klingenthal was also able to win the first run of the GDR championships. With a 40-second lead, he referred his club-mate Gerd Hessler to silver. Hartmut Freyer from Oberwiesenthal won bronze.

50 km

The demanding route, which was relocated to the area around the Großer Beerberg due to lack of snow, caused long time gaps with its profile. In the end, Gert-Dietmar Klause from Klingenthal won the race by over a minute ahead of Gerd Heßler. The recently recovered Gerhard Grimmer from Oberhof took bronze in the first championship decision of his last competition season.

Against the Klingenthal relay team, which was peppered with three Olympic starters, the Oberhof relay team was able to keep the race open for a while, but in the end had to admit defeat, 38 seconds behind. The bronze relay from Zella-Mehlis, however, was already more than three and a half minutes behind.

Women

5 km

There were exactly the same medal winners on the sprint course as on the 10 km course. But this time the duel at the front was much more exciting. This was helped by the fact that Veronika Schmidt got on the trail immediately after Barbara Petzold at the usual 30-second interval. Petzold never succeeded in increasing this gap, on the contrary. At the finish, Veronika Schmidt ran out three seconds ahead and could look forward to her second championship title.

Nordic combination

After jumping on the Marktiegelschanze a bigger surprise appeared. Not the Olympic champion from Innsbruck, Ulrich Wehling, but the Olympic third Konrad Winkler was ahead after three jumping runs. Wehling was only fourth, 56 seconds behind Winkler. Nevertheless, the new GDR master was called Ulrich Wehling again. However, Winkler's fall at kilometer 9 also played an active part in this. Until then, he had only given Wehling 25 seconds. Winkler couldn't avoid a runner who had fallen in front of him and so lost the rest of the lead.

Ski jumping

Normal hill

30,000 spectators experienced an exciting competition on the Marktiegelschanze. After the first round, Bernd Eckstein from SC Motor Zella-Mehlis from the neighborhood was a bit surprisingly ahead. He was ahead of the Olympic third from Innsbruck, Henry Glaß, and the current Four Hills Tournament winner and Olympic wide Jochen Danneberg. Olympic champion Hans-Georg Aschenbach was only in 8th place. In the second round, however, Eckstein could not repeat his performance. Jochen Danneberg climbed to 93 meters, which meant a new hill record and the championship title. Silver remained for Eckstein. Henry Glaß fell back to the ungrateful fourth place, while Falko Weißpflog was able to secure bronze with two solid jumps. Hans-Georg Aschenbach moved up to sixth place.

Team jumping from the normal hill

The team competition was won by ASk Vorwärts Oberhof by a large margin. Against the team that started with Olympic champion Hans-Georg Aschenbach and Four Hills Tournament winner Jochen Danneberg, the competition could not survive. In the absence of a large hill in Lauscha, this second jumping competition was included in the program.

Large hill

Already at the end of January, between the Four Hills Tournament and the Olympic Games, the championship jump was completed on the large hill in Oberhof Kanzlersgrund. Since Lauscha did not have a large hill, the sports officials decided on this solution. At the same time, this jumping was the last opportunity to win the two Olympic starting places next to H.-G. Occupy Aschenbach, Danneberg and Eckstein. A dramatic jump developed, which was characterized by falls, a new hill record and a surprising outcome. 37 jumpers started in front of 10,000 spectators. The initially fast track suddenly became dull due to the onset of snowfall, resulting in interruptions and three shortenings of the inrun length. After the first round, Jochen Danneberg led, who with 119 m improved the previous seven-year-old hill record by three meters. Behind were Hans-Georg Aschenbach and Bernd Eckstein. Henry Glaß and Dietmar Aschenbach could not stand their jumps of 117 m each. In the second round, Danneberg fell at 118 m, but it was enough for silver. As a result, the average width of 95.5 m in the second run after 114 m in the first run was enough for Hans-Georg Aschenbach to become champion. Bernd Eckstein couldn't improve, he was left with bronze. Following the jumping, Henry Glaß and Hans-Georg Aschenbach were nominated for the Olympic Games.
