Beth Jan Coats (born July 20, 1966 in Albuquerque ) is a former American biathlete and cyclist . She took part in two Olympic Winter Games and seven biathlon world championships as well as two world championships in mountain biking , but had to end her career early due to a permanent injury.
Beth Coats was active in many sports such as mountain biking, telemarking and climbing. In 1989, the future National Guard from Breckenridge began biathlon and was part of Josh Thompson's training group . She quickly moved up to the US national team. The first international championship was the 1989 Winter Universiade in Bulgaria. In 1991 Coats started in Lahti at her first world championships and was 39 in both individual and sprint. The following year she started at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , where biathlon for women was also on the program for the first time. Coats was used here in singles and was 47. Two years later she was used in all three Olympic races in Lillehammer . In the sprint she was 51st, in the individual 33rd and on the side of Joan Smith , Laura Tavares and Joan Guetschow eighth in the relay race. A little later she started in Canmore at the World Championships , where only the non-Olympic team race was held. With Tavares, Smith and Gillian Sharp , she finished fifth. The last major international event was the 1995 World Championships in Antholz . As in 1991, Coats was 39th of the individual and came in eighth with Kristina Sabasteanski , Stacey Wooley and Ntala Skinner . After the season she ended her career in biathlon, during which she was able to run into the points in the Biathlon World Cup several times and once reached the top ten ranks as tenth of an individual in Canmore in the 1993/94 season .
In 1995 Coats switched to mountain biking as a professional, which she had been doing for a long time as a compensation in the snow-free summers to keep fit. As early as the winter of 1995, she decided not to participate in biathlon in Europe and began preparing for the following year of cycling, as the sport promised her a secure livelihood. By the end of 1995 she was tenth in the world rankings. At the 1996 World Championships she finished 17th and in 1997 16th. In 1997 she was also third in the national racing series, second in the US national rankings and fourth in a World Cup race in Vermont . However, the year before she missed a sixth two ranks to qualify for the Olympic Games of Atlanta . For 1998 Coats was one of the favorites for the world title. But she crashed on a climbing tour between two bike races in Eldorado Canyon State Park near Boulder and was seriously injured. Since then she has been paralyzed from the abdomen down, but continues to do sports as a handbiker .
