Hubert Leitgeb (born October 31, 1965 in Antholz , South Tyrol ; † February 4, 2012 at Staller Sattel ) was an Italian biathlete .

Hubert Leitgeb was a police officer and lived in Antholz. He started biathlon in 1984 and worked for the Centro Sportivo Carabinieri . He has been active in the biathlon world cup since the mid-1980s . The first major event was the Biathlon World Championships in 1989 in Feistritz an der Drau , where the Italian was used in singles and reached 14th place. In 1990 he was 34th of the individual in Minsk and ninth in the team race at Holmenkollen in Oslo with Andreas Zingerle , Johann Passler and Gottlieb Taschler . In 1991 he won the gold medal in the team race at the Lahti World Championships together with Taschler, Simon Demetz and Wilfried Pallhuber . In the 1991/92 season he achieved his first result on the World Cup podium in a single in Novosibirsk behind Wolfgang Perner and Sylfest Glimsdal with third place. The next races he contested at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville . At the races in Les Saisies , Leitgeb finished 26th in the sprint and just missed a medal with Passler, Pieralberto Carrara and Zingerle in fourth place.

The 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer missed Leitgeb, but shortly thereafter he won in Canmore with a single his only World Cup race. At the simultaneous World Cup , where the non-Olympic races were held, he won the title again with Pieralberto Carrara , Zingerle and Pallhuber. At the biathlon world championships in 1995 in his hometown of Antholz, Leitgeb was only used in the relay race, where he just missed a medal in fourth place alongside Pallhuber, Patrick Favre and Carrara. The 1996 biathlon world championships in Ruhpolding went better . In the team race he won the bronze medal in the relay line-up of the previous year behind the representatives from Belarus and Russia. In the individual, he just missed another medal in fourth place. Leitgeb was last used at a World Cup in 1997 in Osrblie , where he finished tenth in the team race with Helmuth Messner , Enrico Tach and Carrara. The last major event was the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano . Leitgeb was only used in the sprint, where he finished 35th. After the season he ended his career and was initially a biathlon coach for five years. Leitgeb has been the race director of the biathlon races there since the 2007 Biathlon World Championships in his home town of Antholz. He was a member of the IBU Technical Commission .

Leitgeb died at the age of 46 in an avalanche accident near Antholz am Staller Sattel . He leaves behind his wife and two children.
