Marek Helinurm

Marek Helinurm (born May 6, 1963 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian hurdler who competed over the 400-meter distance .

Helinurm is multiple Estonian champion and participant in European and world championships. At the World Athletics Championships in 1993 in Stuttgart , he failed with 50.73 seconds in qualification. At the European Championships in Helsinki in 1994 he was also eliminated in the run-up with a time of 51.87 seconds. He is still the Estonian record holder over the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 49.86 seconds, set on May 26, 1985 in Tallinn . It is also part of the Estonian record relay over the 4 x 400 meters , which ran in the line-up of Aivar Otsalt , Raivo Raspel , Marek Helinurm and Aivar Ojastu on June 14, 1987 in Minsk 3: 08.4 minutes (both records: stand January 2010). In 1991 and 1992 he was able to win the Estonian championship title over the long hurdles. Until Estonia gained independence in 1991, he started for the Soviet Union , but could not prevail against the strong Alexandr Charlow , Alexander Vasiljew and Vladimir Budko . He hung up his spikes in 1994. At competition times, he was 1.86 m tall and weighed 78 kg.

Helinurm has been married to former biathlete Kaija Parve since 1990 , and the couple have three daughters. He works for the Tallinn Criminal Police as a chief inspector in the car theft department. From 2000 to 2002 Helinurm was director of the Tallinn Equestrian Center before returning to the police force.

In the local elections in Estonia on October 18, 2009, Helinurm stood as a candidate for the Center Party in the Nõmme constituency in Tallinn, but could not win a seat in the city council.
