Holger Schönthier (born May 16, 1969 in Ebingen ) is a former German biathlete who took on Austrian citizenship on May 23, 2002 and then started for Austria .
Career
Schönthier began biathlon in 1984 and has been a member of the German national team since 1986 and of the Austrian national team from 2002. From 1986 to 1998 he was a member of the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr in Bischofswiesen . In 1989 he won the season runner-up in the junior world championship in Voss, Norway . In the following season 1989/90 Schönthier made his debut in the biathlon world cup . Overall, he was able to place in the points five times in his World Cup appearances. His best World Cup season was 1992/93 . Besides a few placements in the points, he celebrated his only World Cup victory with the Germany II season in Pokljuka . Due to the great competition in the German team and differences with coaches and officials, however, Schönthier was unable to qualify for the German World Cup team on a permanent basis. Even if he was able to run into the points twice in the 1996/97 season , it was his last World Cup season for Germany. He only started again in the World Cup for Austria in the 2002/03 season , but was unable to place himself in the points and ended his career after the season.
Schönthier celebrated his real success in the Biathlon European Cup . In the 1988/89 season he won the overall standings. He was able to secure second place in the overall standings three times, first in 1991/92 behind Alois Reiter , then in 1993/94 behind René Cattarinussi and again in the 1996/97 season behind Ulf Karkoschka . He was able to win numerous races in the European Cup. In his final season of 2002/03 he achieved three more wins and a second place for Austria.
Schönthier was European sprint champion in Kontiolahti in the 1993/94 season . In 1994/95 in Le Grand-Bornand he reached third place at the European Championships in singles and in 1996/97 in Windischgarsten he was able to win the European Championship title in the relay together with Ulf Karkoschka, Lars Kreuzer and Marco Morgenstern . In addition to these international successes, he was German champion six times and Austrian national champion twice.
At the end of the 2003 season he had to end his career after heel operations on both feet and began training as a naturopath and sports practitioner. In 2007 he opened his own practice in Bad Reichenhall . Holger Schönthier has been married since 1992 and has a daughter and a son.
