In season 1979-80 was Biathlon World Cup held for the 3rd time. The competition series consisted of five individual, sprint and relay races for men and was held at five venues. In addition to the five World Cup events in Ruhpolding , Antholz , Lahti , Hedenäset and Murmansk , the Winter Olympics were held in Lake Placid , USA , but the results were not included in the World Cup. Frank Ullrich won the overall World Cup ahead of Klaus Siebert and Eberhard Rösch .
