Iryna Merkuschina , born Iryna Kortschahina ( Ukrainian Ірина Меркушіна born Ірина Корчагіна , Russian Ирина Меркушина / Корчагина * 8. March 1968 in Kuibyshev , then Soviet Union ) is a former Ukrainian biathlete .

Career

Merkuschina started biathlon in 1986 . She has been active in the biathlon world cup since the early 1990s . At the Biathlon World Championships in Borovets in 1993 , she competed with the Ukrainian relay and was sixth. This was followed by World Cup participation in 1997 in Osrblie , 2000 at Holmenkollen in Oslo and 2003 in Khanty-Mansiysk . She achieved her greatest success in 2003 as a silver medalist with the relay. In 1998 she competed in the Olympic sprint race in Nagano and was 49. She also won bronze with the relay at the European Championships in 2001 in Haute-Maurienne and in 2002 in Kontiolahti . In 2004, she just missed a medal in Forni Avoltri as fourth.

In 2004 she ended her career.

The married sports teacher lives in Sumy . She has two daughters, one of whom, Anastassija Merkuschyna , also competes as a biathlete in the World Cup and is trained by her.

successes

Merkuschina achieved her best placings in the World Cup in team races, as at major international events. The best placings were in 2000 third places in Ruhpolding and Antholz with the relay and 1997 in Ruhpolding with the team. Her best result in an individual race in 2000 was fifth in a sprint in Oberhof .
