Jelena Alexejewna Schalina ( Russian Елена Алексеевна Шалина , born September 22, 1969 in Barnaul , Altai region ) is a former Russian cross-country skier and biathlete .

Jelena Schalina lives in her native Barnaul and started her sports career in 1980, her first trainer was W. Larin. She was twice Russian junior champion in cross-country skiing. She started in the 1992 World Cup and achieved her best result in World Cup singles in 1993 in Kawgolowo (near Toksowo ) with seventh place over 30 km. She repeated this placement in the 1994/95 season in Sappada , Italy , over 15 km freestyle and over 5 km freestyle. In addition, she was third in the season in Oslo and second in Lahti and reached the end of the season with 152 points and 21st place, her best placement in the overall World Cup. She completed her last world cup race in the cross-country skiing world cup in February 1996 in Kawgolowo, which she finished classically with 31st place over 10 km. In the biathlon world cup she ran from the 1996/97 season for the Russian team at the competitions in Oberhof , Ruhpolding and Antholz . She scored 25th in the sprint in Oberhof and qualified for the pursuit, which she finished 29th. In Ruhpolding she showed poor shooting performance, she was only 47th in the sprint, and in Team Russia 2 (Schalina, Tupilenko , Ischmuratowa , Sprung ) in tenth place she was the weakest shooter. Another three shooting mistakes prevented a top ten placement in the Antholz sprint, but fifteenth place was her best World Cup result. The last appearance of her international career was at the 1999/2000 European Biathlon Championships in Kościelisko . Despite five penalty minutes, she was still 18th of the individual, three and a half minutes behind, the greatest career success she achieved as the starting runner in the relay together with Olga Saizewa , Julija Kondratjewa and Olga Romasko as fifth of the relay competition. After that, she appeared primarily in the Continental Cup and nationally as a cross-country skier, in 2000 she became the Russian cross-country champion. By profession she is a sports teacher and works as a referee for the sports and training center Dinamo des Krai Altai .
