Zhang Chengye ( Chinese  张 成 烨 , Pinyin Zhāng Chéngyè , born May 20, 1982 in Jilin ) is a former Chinese biathlete and cross-country skier .

Career

biathlon

Zhang Chengye is from Tonghua and started biathlon as a student in 2002 . He has been part of the Chinese national team since 2003 and competes for the Chinese Biathlon Association . He made his World Cup debut in 2004 in Pokljuka . Shortly afterwards he was 16th in the sprint in Antholz for the first time in the points. In the following year he achieved his best individual placement as second in the individual in the same place. At the Winter Asian Games 2007 he won gold in the relay and silver in the individual race. His best season was 2007/08 . He was in the top ten five times, and at the end of the season Zhang finished 21st in the overall World Cup ranking. In addition, he finished 19th overall in the mass start and pursuit World Cup.

After bad placements at the World Championships in Oberhof in 2004, he was able to achieve a 16th place in the individual at the World Championships in Hochfilzen the following year . At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , he competed in singles (50th), sprint (18th) and in pursuit (36th). The Biathlon World Championships 2007 and 2008 did not bring the hoped-for results, Zhang never achieved a placement in the top 25. In Vancouver, Zhang Chengye competed again at the Olympics and achieved his best result with 19th place in the individual.

Two years later he started in Ruhpolding at the Biathlon World Championships in 2012 , but did not get above 86th in the sprint and 98th in the individual. With the season he landed on a weak 24th place. After the end of the 2011/12 season, he ended his active biathlon career. A year earlier he was able to win bronze with the relay at the 2011 Asian Winter Games in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Cross-country skiing

Between 2003 and 2006, Zhang competed in international cross-country skiing races. He made his international debut at the 2003 Asian Winter Games , where he won bronze over 15 km and silver over 30 km freestyle. At the Winter Universiade 2005 in Innsbruck he started over the 10 km distance, but did not reach the goal. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , he started in the sprint as well as with the relay, but could only run back places.
