In the 1986/87 season the Biathlon World Cup was held for the 10th time. The World Cup consisted of six individual, sprint and relay races for men and was held at six venues. The six World Cup events took place in Hochfilzen , Borowez , Antholz , Ruhpolding , Canmore and Lillehammer . The world championships were held for the men in Lake Placid, USA, and for the women in Lahti, Finland , but the results were not included in the World Cup ranking. In this World Cup there was an official nation ranking for the first time. Frank-Peter Roetsch won the overall men's world cup ahead of Fritz Fischer and Jan Matouš .
