Walter Pichler was one of the most successful biathletes in West Germany in the mid-1980s. In 1984 he took part in the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo , where he was used in two of the three races. In the individual he ran to 16th place, with Ernst Reiter , Peter Angerer and Fritz Fischer he won the bronze medal in the relay competition behind the USSR and Norway. In the following year he won at the Biathlon World Championships 1985 in Ruhpolding with Angerer, Fischer and Herbert Fritzenwenger again bronze behind the Soviet Union and the East German relay. BothAt the 1986 Biathlon World Championships in Oslo, Pichler was 16th in the sprint. In 1986 he also won the sprint title at the German Championships. After the season he retired from the German national team in a dispute.

After his active biathlon career, Pichler became a trainer. First he was the national coach of the USA. As the youngest World Cup trainer of the time, he looked after Max Cobb, among others . Then he was a youth trainer at the Bavarian Biathlon Association. Pichler has been the head coach of the British biathlon team since 2009 and looks after Adele Walker , Emma Fowler , Olwen Thorn , Lee-Steve Jackson and Marcel Laponder, among others . His cousin Wolfgang Pichler is also a former biathlete and successful biathlon trainer.
