Olwen Rhian Thorn (born August 23, 1984 in Aberdeen ) is a British cross-country skier and biathlete .

Career

Olwen Thorn starts for Huntly Nordic Ski Club and is trained by Walter Pichler . She learned to ski in the northeast of Scotland . Thorn is one of the few British biathletes who is not part of the armed forces and is therefore not promoted by them. So she has to pay for her own interests and look for sponsors. The athlete has been studying European Studies at the University of Aberdeen since 2007 and lives in Ruhpolding for training reasons . Since the beginning of the 2000s, she has been one of the broadest leaders in British cross-country skiing. Several times she was able to place well at national championships. In 2008 over 10 kilometers and in the Super 16 and in 2009 in the Super 16 and the double pursuit, she won the titles as British Champion. There are also three silver and two bronze medals. Internationally, Thorn made her debut in January 2006 in a 5-kilometer race in the classic technique in Stokke , where she was 103rd. Up until 2008, further races followed in lower class races such as the Alpine and Scandinavian Cup without achieving any results worth mentioning. In 2007 she switched to biathlon. At the beginning of the 2008/09 season she made her debut in Idre in the IBU Cup , in which she participated regularly throughout the season. In her first sprint race, she finished 79th. In the following races she was able to improve steadily and in her last race of the season at the season finale in Ridnaun in a pursuit race in 37th place for the first time in the points. The first successes were also quickly achieved nationally. In 2008 Thorn won her first biathlon medal with bronze in the relay competition, in 2009 silver in the mass start and bronze in the individual, and in 2010 silver in the individual and with the relay.
