Ri Ul-sol (born September 14, 1921 ; † November 7, 2015 ) was a North Korean politician of the Labor Party of Korea (PdAK) and marshal of the Korean People's Army , who was a member of the Central Military Commission between 1980 and 2010 , from 1990 to 2003 member of the National Defense Commission of the Supreme People's Assembly of the People's Republic of Korea, the highest leadership organization of the government, and between 1996 and 2003 was the commander of the Supreme Guard Command.

Life

Ri Ul-sol received his military training in Vladivostok and Khabarovsk and joined the partisan units of Kim Il-sung in the late 1930s . He was later a graduate of the State Military Academy " Mikhail Vasilyevich Frunze ". On his return he was in 1948 commander of a regiment of the Korean People's Army and then in 1950 chief of staff of the 4th Division. During the Korean War in 1951 he was commander of the 3rd regiment belonging to the 15th Division. After his promotion to major general in 1957, he was commander of a division and, after his promotion to lieutenant general in 1962, commanding general of the V Army Corps. On October 8, 1962, he was also elected for the first time as a deputy of the Supreme People's Assembly, of which he was a member until 2014.

In March 1968, Lieutenant General Ri became the commanding general of the 1st Army Corps and at the 5th party congress of the PdAK in 1970, he became a member of the Central Committee of the PdAK for the first time, to which he belonged until his death. In 1972 he was appointed Colonel-General promoted and took over again the post of Commanding General of the Fifth Army Corps. In 1975 he became First Secretary of the Hamgy Hamng-namdo Province Party Committee and in 1980 he was also a member of the Central Military Commission , of which he was a member until 2010. In 1982 he was awarded the Kim Il-sung Order . In addition, in 1982 he took over the post of deputy commander of the guards command and as head of the department for bodyguards and escort there, which was responsible for the safety of Kim Il-sung, his family and other high state and party officials.

Ri Ul-sol became director of the State Security Bureau in 1984 and was promoted to general as such in 1985 . In 1990 he first became a member of the National Defense Commission of the Supreme People's Assembly of the People's Republic of Korea, the supreme leadership organization of the government. In 1992 he was promoted to Vice Marshal and was awarded the Order of Hero of the People's Republic of Korea twice. In 1994 he was a member of the burial committee for Kim Il-sung, as well as in 1995 to the funeral committee for Marshal O Chin-u . In 1995 he was awarded the rank of Marshal of the Korean People's Army together with Choe Kwang , making him only the third member of the People's Army to receive this rank after O Jin-u in 1992. In 1996 he became commander of the Supreme Guard Command and held this position until 2003, when Colonel General Yun Jong-rin succeeded him. In 1997 he was again honored with the Order of the Hero of Socialist Labor and the Order of the National Flag, First Class.

Ri won twice the title during his military and political career, among others Hero of the People's Republic of Korea , three times the Kim Il-sung Medal , the Kim Jong-il Medal , 15 times the Order of the National Flag First Class and ten times the Order for freedom and independence .
