Niamina East is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of ten districts in the Central River Region .
According to a calculation from 2013 about 21,996 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census of 2003 was 19,034.
The name is derived from Niamina - a former small Mandinka empire.

According to a survey from 1993 (census at that time), the largest population group is the Wolof with a share of around four-tenths, followed by the Mandinka and the Fula. The distribution in detail: 27.2% Mandinka , 26.2% Fula , 42.2% Wolof , 0.6% Jola , 1% Serahule , 0.6% Serer , 0% Aku , 0.2% Manjago , 0 , 4% Bambara and 1.6% other races.
