Creation and publication

Silence Teaches You How to Sing was recorded in February 2001 using material from a jam session; While working on the EP, Kristoffer Rygg took photographs that were exhibited in July. Silencing the Singing was written in August 2001 - the piece Darling Didn't We Kill You? but still goes back to the work on Perdition City . Both EPs were mastered by Strype Audio, released by Jester Records in 2001, distributed via Voices of Wonder and were limited to 2000 and 3000 copies respectively. The compilation of both EPs by Black Apple Records was limited to 1000 copies, that of Jester Records was unlimited. Both EPs together were released for the first time on vinyl by Ampullae Audio in 2014.

style

The EPs Silence Teaches You How to Sing and Silencing the Singing continue the minimalist ambient elements of Perdition City . The pieces are with hints of film noir soundtracks, lounge - jazz , trip-hop , noise and Clicks & Cuts interspersed. Only on Silence Teaches You How to Sing is a short, but textless vocal passage used, otherwise the pieces are instrumental. The atmosphere is mostly melancholy and mysterious. Allmusic's William York compares Silence Teaches You How to Sing with works by Coil , Pole and Tarwater .
