Metamorphosis is the first EP by the Norwegian band Ulver . It was released by Jester Records in 1999 and was distributed through Voices of Wonder .

Creation and publication

The EP should serve as a foretaste of the next album Perdition City - Music to an Interior Film , which was already announced on the back cover. (In February 2016 the two were finally re-released together as a double LP.) Ulver, consisting only of Kristoffer Rygg and Tore Ylwizaker , recorded Metamorphosis at the Jester and Beep Jam Studios. Ylwizaker mixed the EP at Endless Sound Productions, Ingar Hunskaar mastered it at Strype Laboratories.

Track list

The pieces were written by Rygg and Ylwizaker. An excerpt from Arthur Rimbaud's Une Saison en enfer was used for “Gnosis” . A music video for "Limbo Central" was released on Perdition City .

  1. Of Wolves & Vibrancy - 4:45
  2. Gnosis - 7:59
  3. Limbo Central (Theme from Perdition City) - 3:36
  4. Of Wolves & Withdrawal - 8:55

style

A comment printed in the inlay of Metamorphosis expresses Ulvers' clear rejection of being categorized as a black metal band. So the title of the EP is programmatic, because the band is now finally performing the metamorphosis from metal to electronica band indicated by Themes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell . The pieces on the EP can be assigned to techno , trip-hop and ambient . There are hectic beats and loops , electronic effects and noises as well as minimalist soundscapes. Most of the pieces are instrumental.

reception

The reactions to the EP were mostly positive. Allmusic's William York doesn't consider Metamorphosis to be Ulver's standout release, but it is worthwhile for fans of its post-metal phase. Gunnar Claussen from Babyblauen Seiten thinks the EP is “quite exciting”, Andreas Stappert from Rock Hard “[s] very bizarre, but definitely interesting”.
