Alex Ward

Alex J. Ward (* 1974 in London ) is a British musician ( clarinet , saxophone , guitar ) and composer of avant-garde jazz and new improvisation music .

Live and act

Alex Ward learned piano and clarinet as a child, then studied music at Oxford University , where the formation The XIII founded Ghosts with Switch . Later, Derek Bailey became his mentor, on whose albums LOcationAL (1999) and Limescale (2002) he participated. He worked with the London Improvisers Orchestra ( Proceedings , 1999), in a duo with drummer Steve Noble ( Ya Boo, Reel and Rumble 1989/90) and in Lol Coxhill's band ( Out to Lunch , 2001/02 and Old Sights, New Sounds 2010), with Eugene Chadbourne / Paul Lovens , Milo Fine , also in a duo with drummer Roger Turner 2008.

In 2002 Ward recorded the solo album Hapless Days for the Copepod label ; The album Help Point followed in 2003 in a quintet line-up with Simon H. Fell , Steve Noble, Luke and Dale Barlow . In 2005 UnAmerican Activities # 74 was created with the Italian RARA ensemble . Recently his albums appeared Cremated Thoughts with his trio formation of Ward, Steve Noble and John Edwards and Barkingside (on intact ) with pianist Alexander Hawkins , bassist Dominic Lash and percussionist Paul May. In 2011 he took the vocalist Kay Grant , the Duo album Fast Talk (Emanem) on; In 2013 he worked with the Forebrace quartet (album Bad Folds 2013). In 2018 he presented the album Doors (Copepod Records) with Andrew Lisle .
