chronology
- Vargnatt Ulverytternes Kamp / Mourning
(1994)

Vargnatt ('Wolfsnacht') is the only demo by the Norwegian band Ulver . It dates from 1993.

Emergence

According to the supplement, Vargnatt was recorded from October 15 to 17, 1993 in a Norwegian "troll forest"; the demo was produced by the band themselves, Huldra worked as a sound engineer. Robin Malmberg from Mysticum helped out as bass player during the recordings . The track Ulverytternes Kamp was reused for the split single Ulverytternes Kamp / Mourning with his band.

Wild Rags released a bootleg by Vargnatt with a picture of Shagrath by Dimmu Borgir peeing himself. Kris R. complained about this release:

“That's a really bad thing. I could kill those guys. Shagrath was a short-time member in Ulver in '94, and putting those kinds of comments in our mouths is so low. I don't like the music of Dimmu Borgir, but the guys are ok. It's a compliment to make bootlegs, but not this way, thank you. "

“This is a really bad thing. I could kill these people. Shagrath was a brief member of Ulver in 1994, and putting those kinds of comments into our mouths is pretty pathetic. I don't like Dimmu Borgir's music, but the people are fine. It's a compliment to bootleg, but not that way, thanks. "

- Kristoffer Garm Rygg : Kogaionon

In addition, the demo, along with rehearsal room recordings, is included on the bootleg Ondes Triumph . A 10 "re-release came out in 2003 through Infinite Vinyl Series (a division of The End Records). In 2009 Kyrck Productions from Greece released the demo on CD; it was released both as a regular CD and in brown and white leather (leatherbook edition). In the booklet of this CD version, the names of the musicians from the original version have been replaced; Carl-Michael Eide is no longer called C. Michael, but Czral, Kristoffer Rygg Garm instead of Kris R. and Robin Malmberg no longer with his first name, but with the pseudonym Mean Malmberg. H. Jørgensen is called Haavard; with A. Reza the initial was dropped. Only at Grellmund did the name remain unchanged. Vargnatt was also part of Trolsk Sortmetall 1993-1997 , a box set launched in 2014 by Century Media .

Music style and lyrics

Vargnatt combines raw metal with acoustic passages. The demo differs stylistically from Ulver's later releases, but indicates the further development on the first three studio albums through some stylistic elements and a certain independence. Rygg's singing is variable and ranges from whispers to falsetto to growls. In addition to folk-influenced acoustic guitars, typical black metal riffs are mostly used. Eide's drumming is varied and oscillates between calm, complex rhythms and fast blast beats .

The lyrics are from Kristoffer Rygg and later band member Jørn H. Sværen . They are written in Norwegian and - with the exception of the title track Vargnatt - have not been printed.

reception

Metalion , publisher of fanzine Slayer and owner of the Head Not Found label , was so impressed with the demo that he offered Ulver a contract and NOK 5,000 to record an album. Trickster F. from the ProgArchives is a big Ulver fan, but criticizes the demo heavily. The production is terrible, the guitars play incoherent noise and Rygg's vocals are embarrassing. He regrets the purchase, but can imagine that Vargnatt will please fans of raw Black Metal. On aversionline.com , the vocals are sometimes criticized, but the songwriting and the atmosphere are praised. aVoid from avantgarde-metal.com describes the demo as one of Ulver's most innovative recordings.
