The unicursal hexagram is a hexagram or a six-pointed star that can be traced or drawn in a continuous line and not by two superimposed triangles. The hexagram can also be represented within a circle with the points that touch it. It is often represented in a nested form, with the lines of the character going over and under each other to form a knot pattern . It is a specific example of the more general form discussed in Blaise Pascal's , Hexagrammum Mysticum Theorem , published in 1639 . The oldest known representation so far is the Figura Amoris from the font Articuli adversus mathematicos by Giordano Bruno .

Thelema

The unicursal hexagram was used in the Golden Dawn for the degree of philosophy 4 = 7 and was there as a pseudo-hexagram, known as the irregular third form.

Aleister Crowley adopted the hexagram for the Thelema system . Israel Regardie always believed that the unicursal hexagram was invented by Crowley, but on sifting through the Golden Dawn papers, he found that the symbol was older.

In Aleister Crowley's thelema, the hexagram is usually represented with a five-flowered flower in the middle, which symbolizes a pentagram . According to Crowley, the lines are strictly Euclidean because they have no width. The symbol itself is the equivalent of the ancient Egyptian Ankh or the Rosicrucian Rosicrucian . The pentagram represents the microcosmic forces, which are intertwined with the macrocosmic forces represented by the hexagram.

In pop culture

  • The unicursal hexagram is used on the "The Seal of Orichalcos" card in the Yu-Gi-Oh! shown.

  • It appears several times in the television series Supernatural as the logo of an organization called Men of Letters. It was also mentioned in season 8 of "As Time Goes By" as a symbol of belonging to the Men of Letters. It is said to be above the gates of Atlantis.

  • It was used by the Ordre Martiniste , which was founded in France in 1884. This order's patents from the early 1880s show the unicursal hexagram in an engraving on the side of a symbolic cube located near the lower left corner of every 19th century martinist order diploma / patent.
  • It can be seen on the Uncharted 3 game loading screen .
