Heinrich Helferich

Heinrich Helferich (born May 4, 1851 in Tübingen , † December 18, 1945 in Eisenach ) was a German surgeon and university professor .

Life

Heinrich Helferich was the son of the national economist Johann von Helferich (1817-1892) and his wife Amalie Henriette nee. Tendril († 1912). He studied medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the University of Leipzig . During his studies he became a member of the Academic Choral Society in Munich .

In 1874 Helferich was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . After working as an assistant doctor with Karl Thiersch in Leipzig , he qualified as a doctor in surgery in 1879. His father was rector of the LMU at that time . In the same year he became director of the Surgical Polyclinic in Munich, which he greatly expanded.

In 1885 he became a full professor at the University of Greifswald . There he initiated the new building of the clinic in today's Friedrich-Loeffler-Straße. The University of Greifswald elected him rector for the academic year 1892/93. In 1886 Helferich was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

In 1899 he was appointed to the chair of surgery at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel , succeeding Friedrich von Esmarch . In 1907 Helferich was dismissed from his office because of serious shortcomings and personal misconduct. They were seen as a result of " nervous exhaustion ". Shortly afterwards, the title of professor and the rank of general physician in the imperial navy was revoked.

His son Burckhardt Helferich became a chemist .
