from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NTM series for the history of natural sciences, technology and medicine was a magazine in the GDR , which appeared from 1960 to 1991.

The journal first appeared in 1960, with the first four issues still bearing the title Journal for the History of Natural Sciences, Technology and Medicine (NTM) . The journal was founded by the historian of science Gerhard Harig and the historian of medicine Alexander Mette (1897–1985). After Harig died in 1966, the mathematician and mathematical historian Hans Wussing took over his duties at the journal in 1967 . The magazine was first published by VEB Deutscher Verlag der Wissenschaften in Berlin. From 1965 the magazine was published by the Academic Publishing Company Geest & Portig KG in Leipzig.

In the publications, the historical representations in the field of natural sciences, technology and medicine should primarily be emphasized. Authors from several countries were able to publish their articles in the journal. The authors from the GDR limit themselves mainly to contributions from the 19th century. The topics from the historical field of technology were only treated slightly. The subjects of the natural sciences were treated to the same extent as medical subjects. Soviet authors tried to depict the technical development in the USSR since the October Revolution .

In addition to the articles on the history of the natural sciences, technology and medicine, articles on the history of the natural scientific theories associated with the reports on historical figures were also published. When topics of the philosophical aspects of history were addressed, the standpoints from a Marxist point of view dominated. Special topics were published in supplements to the journal.

In addition to the technical articles, the issues included a current chronicle of the outstanding events and congresses of the relevant institutions and institutions relating to this journal. Suitable memorial days and anniversaries were also taken into account. Domestic and foreign publications were described in reviews , with particular emphasis on Soviet works.

After the end of the GDR, the Birkhäuser Verlag in Basel continued the tradition of this series from 1993 under the title NTM NS International Journal for the History and Ethics of Natural Sciences and Medicine with a new concept. Since 2008 the NTM. Journal for the history of science, technology and medicine published by the German Society for the History of Medicine, Natural Sciences and Technology (DGGMNT) .
