Johannes Volkmann (surgeon)

Johannes Allwill Max Volkmann (born September 26, 1889 in Waldheim , † October 14, 1982 in Hanover ) was a German surgeon.

Life

Volkmann attended school in Zwickau and studied medicine in Erlangen , Grenoble , Kiel and Leipzig . During his studies he became a member of the Association of German Students Erlangen . In Leipzig he received his doctorate in medicine . From 1914 to 1918 he was a medical officer . For his work he received the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class. In 1918/1919 Volkmann worked as a pathologist in Braunschweig . He then moved to the Surgical University Clinic in Halle . There he completed his habilitation in 1923 on surgery of the spleen . Around 1924 he developed intravenous contrast media and excretory urography in Europe. At the same time, Earl D. Osborne was working on similar procedures in North America. This development earned him admission to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 1955 .

In 1928 Volkmann was appointed associate professor . After he was chief physician at the Evangelical Hospital in Münster between 1931 and 1933 , he took over the management of the Bergmannstrost hospital in Halle. In the Weimar Republic Volkmann joined the anti-democratic German National People's Party and in 1922 became a member of the Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten . In 1933 he joined the SA , in 1937 he became a member of the NSDAP ( member no. 4040558). In 1941 Volkmann was drafted as a medical officer . For this mission he received the Eastern Medal and the War Merit Cross 2nd Class. Promoted to senior staff doctor in 1943 , he headed the reserve hospital in Lemberg .

After the end of the war he was released in Halle and worked as chief physician at the Schkeuditz hospital . In 1952 Volkmann was appointed full professor of surgery at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald . After retirement , he moved in 1956 to Hanover, where he was repeatedly worked as deputy head physician.
