From 1940 he studied human medicine at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen , which made him a Dr. med. PhD .

First in Göttingen with Rudolf Schoen in internal medicine , he went to the Heidelberg surgery to Karl Heinrich Bauer . Surgical pathophysiology and pulmonary and thoracic surgery became his main areas of work. In 1955 he moved to Ernst Derra at the Medical Academy in Düsseldorf , where he completed his habilitation in 1956 . After the independence of neurosurgery and anesthesiology (1971), the departments created for Urology (1972), Heart and Vascular Surgery (1975) and Traumatology (1978). The directors were Heribert Wand , Alexander Bernhard and Dieter Havemann . 19 post-doctoral qualifications and 21 chief physicians emerged from Löhr's clinic . In 1970 he headed the 105th meeting of the Association of Northwest German Surgeons .

After the death of his first wife, he married his head surgery nurse. In his home on post see he grew orchids . Resigned from his full professorship in 1978 for health reasons , he emigrated to Canada with his wife . His son Joachim Löhr followed them.
